What is the best time to visit Lapland? - Discover Spring Winter in Rovaniemi
One of the questions we get all the time is: When is the best time to visit Lapland? The short answer: it depends. Each season in the Arctic brings its own kind of magic. In this series, we’re sharing what each season feels like here in Rovaniemi, what the weather is like, what experiences you can expect, and why it might be the perfect time for your adventure.
When talking about the seasons of Lapland, we need to point out that Lapland actually has eight seasons: autumn-winter; winter; spring-winter; spring; spring-summer; summer; summer-autumn and autumn. If you are interested in reading more about these distinct seasons, you can find it on the website of Rovaniemi International. But to keep it simple, we will go with the four seasons that probably everyone is familiar with: winter, spring, summer and autumn.
Today, we’ll focus on one of our absolute favorites: spring-winter!

Why Spring-Winter Feels So Special
By March, the sun finally returns, days stretch longer, and life begins to stir after the deep quiet of the polar night. The forests echo with birdsong again, squirrels dart between the trees, and you’ll suddenly find yourself reaching for sunglasses after months of dim winter light.
What makes spring-winter in Rovaniemi so unique is that it’s still full winter – there’s usually plenty of snow on the ground – but the light and warmth of spring are already here. Imagine all the best winter activities, but with longer, brighter days.
Things to Do in Lapland in Spring-Winter
If you visit Rovaniemi in March or early April, you can expect:
- Dog sledding with huskies – our teams still run strong this time of year, and tours often continue until the first or second week of April. Some years, we’re even on the trails later.
- Snowshoeing and winter hiking – the forests are still blanketed in snow, perfect for wandering under the sunshine.
- Ice fishing on frozen lakes – locals love heading to the river or lakes, and you can try your luck too.
- Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing – longer daylight hours make it easier (and more fun) to spend the whole day outside.
- Building snowmen, sledding, or simply soaking in the sun – winter is still here, but it feels lighter, freer, and more playful.
On weekends, the frozen rivers and lakes almost turn into highways for locals! Skiers, skaters, mushers, and families all out enjoying the spring light.
How Long Does the Snow Last in Rovaniemi?
Many visitors ask us: Is there still snow in Rovaniemi in April? The answer is: it depends, but usually yes. Snow often lingers until late April, sometimes even into May. The quality changes as temperatures rise above freezing, and eventually the big melt begins bringing slushy roads, icy walkways, and sometimes flooding. For us, this usually means the husky season is wrapping up, as it’s no longer safe for the dogs or guests on the trails.
But it’s also the time when the forest comes alive with early greenery, migrating birds, and the unmistakable smell of spring.

What to Pack for a Lapland Spring Trip
Even if the sun is shining, don’t be fooled! Spring-winter can still be cold, with temperatures dipping well below zero. We recommend packing the same proper winter gear you’d bring in January: insulated boots, layers, and a good winter jacket. But don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen – yes, even above the Arctic Circle, the spring sun is strong!
