Project RePaw: Giving Our Dogs the Retirement They Deserve
There’s a project that has been close to my heart for many years, and I believe that now, the time is finally right to bring it to life. I’ve spoken about it often, dreamed about it even more, and now it’s time to put action behind my words.
At Bearhill Husky, we’ve always believed that our responsibility to our dogs goes beyond their working years. They give us everything they have—their strength, their speed, their intelligence, and their loyalty. The very least we can do is ensure that when their career as a sled dog is over, they have the chance to enjoy a full, happy life beyond the kennel.
That dream is becoming reality with Project RePaw: a nonprofit initiative dedicated to rehoming retired or unsuitable sled dogs and giving them the retirement they truly deserve.
Why Rehoming Matter to Us
Not every dog born into our kennel becomes a perfect working sled dog. Some are physically capable but struggle with the ever-changing routine of tourism life, with its revolving door of guests and unpredictable schedules. Others may lack the stamina for long days on the trail, or simply don’t enjoy the work as much as their siblings.
This doesn’t make them bad dogs—far from it. Many of these dogs have the potential to be wonderful pets, companions, or even teachers for young sled dogs in other kennels. Over the years, we’ve seen dogs that didn’t thrive with us blossom into incredible companions in the right home. It’s a humbling reminder that sometimes, we’re just not the right humans for every dog we raise.
And then there are the dogs who do make the team—the ones with grit, drive, and the heart of a true sled dog. Like professional athletes or soldiers, their careers are short but intense. By the time they reach six, seven, or eight years old, it’s often time for them to slow down. Some may keep running a little longer; others are ready to retire sooner. Either way, they’ve earned the right to spend the rest of their lives being loved, spoiled, and appreciated for who they are—not just for the work they do.
From a Personal Mission to Project RePaw
For years, Bearhill Husky has quietly rehomed our own dogs when the time was right. But we’ve realized that our responsibility extends beyond just our kennel. There are countless hardworking sled dogs across Lapland—some from partner kennels, some from the wider community—who also deserve a proper retirement.
That’s why we’re creating Project RePaw, a nonprofit organization dedicated to:
– Rehoming retired sled dogs or dogs unsuitable for kennel life.
– Educating the public about Alaskan huskies and their unique needs.
– Building a network of caring people and organizations across Europe to find the best possible homes.
We’ve already seen our dogs thrive in new homes across Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. With patience and the right support, these dogs adapt beautifully to a new lifestyle, trading snowy trails for sunny backyards or mountain hikes with their new families.
More than just rehoming
Project RePaw will also create opportunities for people to meet, walk, and even volunteer with our retired dogs. This isn’t about sled rides—it’s about the dogs themselves. Some will need extra guidance as they adapt to “civilian life,” learning the ropes of being a pet after years in a working kennel.
Bearhill Husky will provide the facilities, the experience, and the initial financial support to get this project running. But the heart of Project RePaw will be a community of volunteers, adopters, and dog lovers working together to give these incredible animals the retirement they deserve.
A Thank You to Our Dogs
For me, Project RePaw is a way to say thank you. Thank you to the dogs who have pulled our sleds, carried our guests, and brought so much joy to our lives. Thank you to the dogs who didn’t quite fit in but still taught us valuable lessons about patience and individuality.
They have given us everything. Now, it’s our turn to give them the very best life we can—whether that’s here at Bearhill, in another loving kennel, or in the home of someone who will cherish them as family.
Project RePaw is our promise to our dogs, and to all the working sled dogs of Lapland: Your hard work will always be honored, and your next chapter will be filled with love.
