BEARHILL’S SCARF 2020

For the support our dogs, you can purchase this handy Bearhill’s husky neck scarf.

All our guests get this scarf complementary during our winter tours for the extra protection against the cold and wind. But it can be used also during the summer and very useful while doing sports. It is made of light weight material, which breaths well and also dries very fast.

There is a little story behind our buff idea. It gets quite windy and chilly during the husky tour, so we wanted to offer some extra wind and cold protection for our guests. We needed to find an easy and functional way for the scarf, so we thought of giving the new neck scarfs to all our guests, which they can take with them home as well as use them during their holidays in Rovaniemi. At first we had blue color for our buff for a few years, but lately we decided to have different color every year. So last year (2019) we had a green color buff and this year we have happy bright pink color.

Please, remember to fill up your full delivery address correctly. As our web shop is made to book tours, there is question for accommodation. Don’t mind that, just put your home town.

We hope you enjoy our multi-functional scarf. Thanks for your support.

WILDERNESS SNOWSHOE HIKE

This is open to book via our webshop for season 2021 – 2022!

2,5 hour program with a break at a campfire.

To snowshoe in the most beautiful winter surroundings gives the body and soul tremendous well-being. The simplicity of practicing this sport makes it the easiest of all winter sports, because if you can walk, you can snowshoe.

From our Husky kennel, if we are lucky with huskies at our side, we head deeper into the arctic taiga forest or out onto the pristine frozen white Viiksjärvi Lake, the snowshoes allowing us to effortlessly float across the deep snow. Take a breath of pure and fresh air and feel all your worries disappear. All the while our guide shares captivating stories and information about the Arctic region, the animals and fauna one can find here and of course our beloved huskies.

ICE FISHING EXCURSION

This is open to book via our webshop for season 2021 – 2022!

2,5 hour program with a campfire snack.

The beauty of ice-fishing lies in its simplicity, it’s quietness and peacefulness one can find whilst sitting on Viiksjärvi Lake. Ice-fishing with us can almost be counted as a sort of meditation. Whilst waiting patiently for something to happen – your mind clears itself unexpectedly and effortlessly. Infinity and silence are the key factors here.

The basics of ice-fishing are very simple. All you need is a lake that is frozen. Even five centimeters of ice is enough to hold the weight of a human being. Once you’ve chosen your fishing spot, you need a core drill for making a hole in the ice and the fishing gear to catch the fish. This is where our guides come into it, providing you with all the necessary equipment and sharing their experience for choosing the right spot on the lake. Catching a fish is not guaranteed but for the patient fisherman, the wait could be worthwhile.

Whilst you try your luck at fishing the guide will make a fire on the ice or the shoreline of the lake where sausages are grilled and warm juice served. If you catch a suitable sized fish we will grill that together.

Business development projects

Bearhill Husky has been investing and building company infrastructure for the past 4 years. A dogsledding kennel needs a lot of facilities to be able to function efficiently. We also need functional facilities for our personnel as well as for our customers. To be able to run our programs all year round, we need to plan and make trails and other infrastructure.

The latest development project we started last summer (2019) to improve our autumn trails, sauna environment, build a wooden Kota and create new programs for the Summer season. For this project we have applied and got approved European development money from the European EAKR fund.

BORN TO RUN TOUR LATE AFTERNOON (NOVEMBER, EARLY WINTER)

This is open to book via our webshop for Autumn 2021!

A 2,5 hour program with 4 km husky cart tour

Huskies are not born fit, it takes lots of preparation and conditioning before the dogs are as fit as they can be. Visit the kennel and get a feel for how the dogs are prepared to be the amazing athletes they are. Before going out on the trail the guide will go over the instructions how to steer the cart. Our enthusiastic dogs will happily take you down the forest trail for an unforgettable experience. One cart is shared by two adults, in halfway there is the chance to switch drivers.

NOTE!
For animal welfare reasons this tour is offered only weather permitting, 10 degrees celcius or colder, otherwise it’s too hot for the huskies to pull.

CALL OF THE WILD AFTERNOON HUSKY SAFARI

This is open to book via our webshop for season 2021 – 2022!

A 3 hour program with 1,5 hour husky safari (travel distance approx 12 – 18 km)

Get away from the city and enjoy the magical forests of the Lappish wilderness. The sound of the panting huskies and the snow underneath your sled is the perfect soundtrack for this adventure. During the tour you will drive your own team of dogs for about about 12-18 km. This is our most popular safari and a genuine way to experience the thrill of running a dog-team.

There is always some time to spend with huskies after the safari, learn some interesting fact about sled dogs and definitely make some nice photos for your memories to take back home. We have nice warm yurt waiting for you after the safari to enjoy stories and hot berry juice.
This program is also suitable for families with children, just note that the duration of the safari is 1,5 hours. We recommend children are warmly dressed and we will provide extra overall to keep warm while sitting in the sled.

FAQ

How many hours of daylight in winter?
The amount of daylight changes rapidly in winter. Up until Christmas the days get shorter, after that spring is on the way and the days get longer. Rovaniemi lies on the Arctic Circle and that means that at least one day a year the sun does not rise above the horizon. This does not mean that the days are pitch black and dark, but that we have a very long period of sunrise followed by a long drawn out sunset. The white snowy landscape also makes things way more bright than expected. For those dark moments we provide headlights for our guests. Our morning tours in December tend to start in the dark and finish with some light. The afternoon tours starts when it is still light and finishes in the dark.

How cold is it in Rovaniemi?
This is hard to say, because the the last years have been unpredictable. In general everything from just below zero to -35 Celsius is possible. We provide you with thermal outerwear, boots and gloves to protect against the cold. See what clothes to wear section below for more information.

When can we do dog-sledding?
We can start our tours with sleds when we have enough snow on our trails, and all the wet areas are frozen. This is often in the first week of December, but can also be as early as mid November.
Although we can drive dogs ourselves under quite difficult conditions, we need very forgiving snow situations before we are able to safely take guests on the trail. Therefore even if it looks like there is a lot of snow, please check to make sure that the tours are available, as we need more than just snow to be able to safely take our guests on a tour.

What to do when there is no snow?
Even without the snow there is plenty to be experienced! In summertime we offer educational kennel visits to take a peek into the daily life of the huskies and mushers. In autumn before the snow comes, we can teach you to drive a smaller cart that has wheels, the huskies eagerly pull! Almost year round we offer experiences with the huskies which vary according to the time of the year. Please don’t hesitate to contact us about questions what to do in summer or autumn while visiting Rovaniemi!

Pregnancy at the time of the tour?
Pregnant women are not at greater risk of an accident or harm than other participants in the tour. It is recommended that pregnant women join the tour as passengers and preferably in guide sled. However we recommend careful consideration if you wish to join a cart or sled driving part of the tour when on the 1st or 3rd trimester. You can send us an email if you wish to have more information and it’s also useful to note it in the booking in advance. If the program requires special organization (e.g. additional transport), Bearhill Husky shall not be responsible for the possible extra costs.

Can you see Northern Lights during the tour?
In general the chances of seeing the Northern lights during the daily tours are very very small, as we are not out late enough to see them. It might be possible to see them during our Black Dog Midnight Madness, as the tour takes place late in the evening. Please note that being able to see the Northern Lights is dependent on the weather conditions, such as cloud cover, temperature, solar wind activity and the location.

What clothes does Bearhill Husky provide?
Driving dogs can be a cold activity and experienced mushers are masters in cold weather dressing. Through years of experience they have developed often very personal ways of staying warm.
Each person is different in how they stay warm so we provide you with thermal outer clothes that will help keep you warm based on our experience. Also taken consideration the period of time you will spend outside during the safari.
We provide you with:
– A complimentary thermal tube scarf (very cool with our logo)
– A thermal outer overall
– Woolen socks
– Winter boots with thermal liner
– Winter mittens
– Winter hat

What clothes to bring?
Although we provide you with thermal outer clothes, it greatly enhances your experience if you dress correctly before you arrive!
So our tips are very simple:
– Wear wool or artificial fibres on the skin, no cotton! Be especially careful of cotton socks as they will be cold, wet and spoil your experience
– Layer up, but not too tightly
– Wear tight thermals and on top of that wool or fleece clothes
– Thin finger gloves and wool socks are a worthwhile investment for any trip to Lapland, but remember no cotton
– A pair of winter trousers and jacket can be worn under the overalls when it is very cold outside

Snow goggles necessary or not?
We do not provide snow goggles during our tours as we do not recommend using them. Personally we prefer to have our vision unimpaired. Goggles tend to fog up, limit visibility and cause unnecessary driving accidents with unexprienced dog drivers. If you really do want to use goggles please bring your own then.

How to dress kids?
We all know that kids get cold and if they are not having fun, you the parents will probably not be having fun either. We can give you first hand tips that will make your experience all the more enjoyable and hopefully keep the kids very warm.
– Dress the kids for the coldest you can imagine, and then a bit more; Children sit in the sleds without movement and it can get cold when sitting for an hour or more
– Layer up, but don’t wear all the layers during the transfer; the kids will get hot, sweaty and agitated, you can take shoes off in the taxi to prevent sweaty wet feet
– No cotton, wear thin thermal gloves and socks, take spare dry socks also with you
– Recommended not to let the kids play in the snow before the tour as they get wet and cold before the tour begins
– When dressing the kids at the kennel, first put on the thermal gloves, hats and tube-scarf and then the overall; keep mittens tucked in the overall and the overall covering the top of the boots
– Keep all the clothes very large, we recommend that boots be at least 2 sizes too big
– The most common mistake is to have tight boots with 2 pairs of cotton socks since you will most likely get very cold with that combination
– Disposable chemical hand-warmers are recommended, but leave enough room in the boots and gloves to use them

Can we see husky puppies?
The answer is complicated and simple at the same time; Sometimes!
We breed dogs to keep our kennel healthy and that means sometimes no puppies and sometimes 1 or 2 litters per year. These pups tend to be born in the spring time and can not be considered “puppies” any more by time the snowfalls. We do our best to prevent unwanted and unplanned pregnancies in the kennel by castrating all our non breeding males.
We are aware that certain kennels time and or plan their litters for display purposes, but we find this a dubious and unethical practice not beneficial to the welfare of the dogs.
If seeing puppies is a priority we recommend that you book with other  a kennel, as we do not reliably have puppies during the winter season.

Are the husky tours suitable for small children?
It is when you dress them well and it’s not too cold. Children can enjoy the tour very much if they are dressed well enough. For infants we would be wary with travelling below -20 Celcius.
If it’s really cold we travel according to the capabilities of our weakest member and might adapt the tour to suit the colder temperatures.

Can you come with your own car?
Maybe! Our kennel is remote and sometimes challenging to reach especially in winter by unexperienced winter drivers. In summer and autumn you can check with us first and get good instructions how to come here. We arrange transfers from and to Rovaniemi in order to keep the schedules working we prefer you use them. It has happened that we have had to delay our tours; to the detriment of part of our group, to go help lost or stuck drivers. In winter or autumn we do not offer any discounts for driving yourself. You can park near town and hitch a ride with our transfer, it’s faster and less stressful for everyone.

From where do we offer pick-ups and drop off?
We can pick you up from:
– Central hotels in Rovaniemi
– Santa Village (reception Santa Claus Holiday Village)
– Ounasvaara (Sky Hotel, Chalets)
If you are staying in a private apartment in Rovaniemi area, we will provide you a centralized pick up point. From that point you will be picked up at the informed time, so please be on time waiting for the driver.
The driver will look for you in the reception area by name and will have a sign that says “Bearhill”.  Sometimes transfer might run with few minutes delays due to weather conditions, some customers being late etc. We try to make sure that any delays do not interfere with the program itself.
On the return journey we can drop you off to Santa´s Village, railway station, the Arctic Snow Hotel or the airport as well.

What kind of huskies are these?
At Bearhill Husky we have what are called “Alaskan Huskies” They are relatively unknown outside of the sled-dog world. They tend to be more diverse in size, eye color and shape than their pure-breed cousins the “Siberian Huskies”. Please ask us about them, we are more than willing to “talk dog” and answer all your questions!

What about the cold?
Yep it’s cold in winter! Just as you can expect it to be hot on a beach in Turkey, it is cold in Lapland. When you prepare for it, it’s not that bad at all. If however it gets colder than we think our guests can safely handle we will adapt the tour program accordingly. Very often this means we will shorten the tour or have a warm up break in between. Below -30 Celcius we recommend this only for “diehards”, below -35 Celcius we will cancel the tours as it does not benefit our dogs or our guests to travel then. When it’s that cold we are using all our skills and years of experience to stay warm ourselves, and keep our dogs safe.

And how about the heat in summer?
It can in fact be really hot during some summer days. When in winter it can get as cold as -30, in summer it can get +30 degrees Celcius!
Our summer program generally includes a short ride with a cart huskies eagerly pull, the cart ride is offered only when temperature is less than +10 degrees Celcius due to the welfare of the dogs. Same goes for the husky cart tours in autumn; if the temperature gets too high, we have to keep in mind the welfare of the dogs and reschedule for example.

Are the dogs friendly?
We can’t speak for anyone else dogs, but most of our dogs are very friendly. We do not mind you interacting with them, in fact we encourage it!

Are single travelers welcome?
You are more than welcome to book as a solo traveler. On sled and cart tours we will pair you up with another solo traveler or a participant from the tour. So be prepared to share the sled or cart with another member from the group if you travel solo. However if you prefer to travel alone we require, that you purchase the single supplement.

How do we do seating arrangements?
Our dogs are amazingly strong but there are limits to what they can pull. This means we have to adapt our seating arrangements to the capabilities of the dogs.
In general our dog teams can handle 2 adults and 2 children per sled. One adult will drive the sled, the other one can sit with the children. If the size, weight or amount of the participants in a group exceed the capacity of the team, we will offer to have the older children or adults join the guides sled or cart.

How many people can join the tour?
In winter we usually have 10 dog-teams at the most leaving on our tours. However it depends on time time of the winter; in December high season we very often travel with a full tour but outside of December it is usually less.
In summer group sizes can be from two people to 15 for example, so it varies and also the same with autumn.

CALL OF THE WILD MORNING HUSKY SAFARI

This is open to book via our webshop for season 2021 – 2022!

A 3 hour program with 1,5 hour husky tour (travel distance approx 12 – 18 km)

One sled is shared by 2 adults, half way there will be a chance to switch drivers. By purchasing one single supplement you reserve one sled per one person.

About us

We are a family run husky kennel based in Rovaniemi, Lapland!

In 2003 we decided to realize a dream and established Bearhillhusky in the small town of Lieksa in North Carelia. The first years were a steep learning curve and can only be described as adventurous and uncertain.
At first we concentrated on longer tours in the wilds of North Carelia, but as our family grew, and our services were more and more in demand in Lapland we decided to relocate to Rovaniemi, and focus on day trips and shorter tours.
Since 2012 the family has been permanently located in Rovaniemi.
It’s our passion to work with dogs, breed them, train them and let them be the best dogs they can be.
It is exactly this passion we love to share with you!

Valentijn

Valentijn has been working with huskies since 2000, has participated in numerous canoeing and rafting expeditions in Russia and has spent time as a gold-miner in the gold fields of Lemmenjoki. Although his passport says he is Dutch, he grew up in Southern Africa and, feels he is a citizen of the world. Valentijn loves learning about dogs and can talk for hours about the intricacies of dog training, the history of huskies, breeding and their nutrition.

Veronika

Veronika has been the down to earth voice in our kennel. She is the one who makes sure that emails are answered, bookings go on time, and that all those unseen important tasks in the background get done. She is also an amazing cook, and her salmon soup has impressed many a culinary critic.

Antti

Our wilderness man, and jack of all trades. Antti makes sure that Bearhill keeps moving forward more or less smoothly. With a true love for the wilderness life in his own original way he is a genuine character. Antti loves nothing more than travelling the wilds with his dog-team and has done many solo sledding expeditions throughout Lapland.

    Packing list

There are quite a few things to take with on a husky tour, but the art is to take as little as possible, but all that you need. You’ll be doing the dogs a great favour this way. It is after all them, who have to pull all that weight around.
So do your dogs a favour and travel light!…

I will try to give a concise list and at the same time explain a bit why certain gear or clothing is useful. At times I will provide links to different manufacturers websites. These are not direct endorsements, but are given so that you can find examples of the gear we are talking about.

    So first of all clothing.

    Clothing, NO COTTON!

For clothing it is important to note that no cotton should be worn on the skin if possible. Cotton is a tropical cloth suited to retaining moisture and slowly releasing it through evaporation, and cooling you that way. It is perfect for the tropics, but far from suitable as a next to skin layer in the arctic.

Preferred materials for arctic base layers are Wool, or synthetics.

Wool is great as it does not smell, and retains its thermal capabilities when wet, however it does not dry as fast as the synthetic materials. Wool can be more comfortable to wear than synthetics.

Some wool thermal manufacturers are Woolpower, Ruskovilla and Icebreaker

Synthetics are materials such as polyester, nylon or polypropylene. Polyester thermals or those made of materials such as “powerstretch fleece” are excellent as thermal layers. Polypropylene is a very effective thermal layer, but it can kind of feel as if you are wearing a plastic bag. Synthetic materials can develop a “certain odour” over time, but offer way better breathability and dryability than wool.

Some synthetic thermal manufacturers are Finnsvala and Haglofs.

    Clothing list

    • Thermal gloves (thin gloves for under your mittens)
    • Mittens or ski gloves (Mittens are always better than fingergloves as they are warmer)
    • Winter work-mans gloves ( for cabin chores and dog-feeding)
    • Winter hat (fleece or fur, but something that reliably covers your ears is best)
    • 2 pairs thermal longsleeve tops (1 for wearing, 1 for spare)
    • 2 pairs thermal trousers (longjohns, Fancy works, but so do some old fashioned wool leggings)
    • Fleece or woolen jumper (I prefer 1 thick and one thin one.)
    • Thermal balaclava
    • Fleece or woolen trousers, 2 pairs
    • Thin thermal socks, 3 pairs (synthetic or preferably wool, remember the odours)
    • Thick woolen socks, 3 pairs (dig out those pairs made by grandma, she knows what she’s doing)
    • Scarf, Neck warmer or Buff.
    • Light weight cabin shoes
